Aftercare

Proper aftercare is essential. How you care for your tattoo in the first weeks determines how it heals for a lifetime.

⚠ Important — Read Before You Leave the Studio

Your tattoo is an open wound. Treat it with the same care you would any other skin injury. Do not skip any steps, and do not substitute recommended products without consulting your artist first. If you experience signs of infection — excessive redness, swelling, heat, or discharge — contact a medical professional immediately.

01

Leaving the Studio

Your tattoo will be covered with either a traditional wrap or a second-skin bandage. Follow the specific instructions for whichever was applied.

If wrapped in plastic film:

  • Remove the wrap after 2–4 hours.
  • Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free, antibacterial soap using clean hands only. Do not use a cloth or loofah.
  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel — do not rub.
  • Apply a very thin layer of unscented lotion or recommended aftercare ointment.
  • Leave the tattoo uncovered to breathe.

If wrapped in second-skin (Saniderm/Tegaderm):

  • Leave the second-skin bandage on for 3–5 days. Do not remove early unless it leaks or lifts significantly.
  • You will see plasma and ink pooling under the bandage — this is completely normal.
  • Once removed, wash gently and begin the moisturizing routine.
02

The First Week

This is the most critical phase. Your tattoo will be raw, swollen, and tender. It may ooze slightly — this is normal healing.

  • Wash the tattoo gently 2–3 times per day with fragrance-free soap.
  • Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer after each wash and whenever the skin feels tight or dry.
  • Do not submerge the tattoo in water — no baths, swimming pools, hot tubs, or open water.
  • Avoid direct sunlight on the tattoo.
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing over the area.
  • Do not wrap or cover the tattoo unless sleeping (optional, to protect bedding).
  • Do not pick, scratch, or peel any flaking skin.
03

The Peeling Phase

Your tattoo will begin to peel, similar to a sunburn. The skin may look milky or cloudy — the final result will become clear once the top layer fully sheds.

  • Continue moisturizing daily, especially if itchy.
  • Do not pick or pull at peeling skin — let it fall off naturally.
  • Itching is normal. Gently slap the area if needed — do not scratch.
  • Continue to avoid direct sun, soaking, and harsh skincare products on the area.
  • The tattoo may appear faded during this stage — this is temporary.
04

Long-Term Care

Once fully healed, your tattoo still requires ongoing care to stay vibrant for years to come.

  • Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen to the tattoo whenever exposed to sunlight. UV exposure is the leading cause of tattoo fading.
  • Keep skin hydrated — well-moisturized skin keeps the tattoo looking its best.
  • Avoid prolonged soaking (long baths, extended pool sessions) as a general habit.
  • If your tattoo looks uneven or patchy at the 6–8 week mark, a complimentary touch-up may be available — reach out to discuss.

What Not to Do

  • Petroleum-based products (Vaseline, Aquaphor) during the first week — they suffocate the skin.
  • Scented lotions, perfumes, or alcohol-based products on the tattoo.
  • Picking, scratching, or peeling skin at any stage.
  • Submerging in any water source while healing.
  • Tanning beds or prolonged sun exposure.
  • Shaving directly over a healing tattoo.
  • Tight or abrasive clothing over the tattooed area.
  • Working out heavily in the first 48–72 hours (excessive sweating can affect healing).
